Work History
I am currently an employee of The Haven Project at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). The Haven Project is a program funded by a Department of Justice grant that is designed to prevent sexual violence, as well as provide services such as counseling and advocacy to survivors. My job at Haven is as a peer educator.
As a peer educator, I am responsible for creating, presenting and facilitating various programs on topics that pertain to sexual assault prevention. One of my most personally valued roles in this job has been my work at freshman orientation in the past year at IUP. As an orientation presenter for Haven last summer, I had 45 minutes with every group of incoming freshmen men (the women had different presenters) in groups of around 50-100 men at a time.
My orientation presentations (which I still give to incoming freshmen men) focus on causes of sexual assault and rape, particularly investigating how such crimes are tied to hetero-normative masculinity. I also have taken this opportunity to talk to the young men about healthy masculinity and the importance of consent and communication in relationships, both sexual and otherwise.
Other work with Haven has included :
-
Presentation at the Blackburn Center Against Domestic and Sexual Violence on how to get campus men involved in issues surrounding sexual assault.
-
Presented at IUP’s 6:00 series program, “What was she thinking? Victim blaming and sexual assault” on the role of communication in healthy sexual relationships.
-
Helped to create “The Green Light Campaign” at IUP, a campaign focused on changing the standard of sexual consent from “no means no” to “only yes means yes,” a campaign that has reached several thousand IUP students in the last three years.
-
Assisted in coordinating events and volunteers for RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network) Day on IUP’s campus, an awareness day that includes artistic shows of support, activities for supporters and survivors of sexual assault, and wide dissemination of information on rape and sexual assault through various mediums.
-
Various awareness programming within residence halls on campus, as well as within fraternities.
-
Organizer for Take Back The Night, a rally, march and speak-out against sexual violence.
Work outside of Haven during college pertaining directly to sex and gender:
-
Current president of Men’s Awareness Project (MAP) at IUP, a student group dedicated to raising awareness of various gender issues. MAP has co-sponsered the GLBT film festival in Indiana, PA, and regularly hosts discussion groups for men on issues related to masculine identity and health.
-
Member of a planning committee for a gender and sexuality center at IUP that is currently in the proposal stage.
-
Volunteer at Alice Paul House (a local domestic violence shelter for women) as a crisis intervention hotline counselor.
